Paddling to The Five-Mile Crib for sunrise has always been a bucket-list item. This weekend's mild conditions allowed it to happen! The trip out in the dark was otherworldly. 'The Crib' is 3.5-miles from shore & five-miles from the Baldwin Pumping station, which services the greater University Circle-area. It is one of four lake 'cribs' which connect to the water-pumping stations onshore, but the only one visible above water (it's the big orange thing on the horizon when you're lounging at Edgewater). Nothing but starry skies, waves, and the chips of nocturnal, migrant birds were encountered on the way out (and necessary safety precautions were taken).
There's a great webcam on the five-mile crib, which I often consult when checking lake conditions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo_CcmOMPvk
