Story time. Though the tale doesn't relate to this particular vantage, it still bears telling. Table Rock overlook is a little-known rock outcropping in nowhere, WV with beautiful sunrise views. We made three attempts to visit it on this particular trip:
1. drove to the gravel entrance road; gate was closed
2. started hiking well before dawn with Matt Shiffler; eventually it became light & we still hadn't reached the trailhead; five miles in we turned around (10 miles round-trip - no views)
3. left Stumptown Ales after an amazing Cleveland Browns win over the Cowboys; decided to try driving in from a different direction. After driving down the gravel bumpy "road" for quite a few miles, I rounded a corner & BANG! Bottomed-out on a rock so hard the whole car shook. Fearing the worst, I checked suspension components & the like & all seemed good. Hiked to the overlook & arrived just before dark. Planned to return for sunrise.
Next morning, it rained & I happened to notice some shimmery spots next to the car in the drive. Pulled out to the dipstick & NOTHING. I'd CRACKED the oil pan the night before & drove 40 miles back to our Airbnb leaking all the way! No local shop could help & the solution was 400-dollar tow into Morgantown (hour-and-a-half away) & 700 in repairs!
I say all this to say...so many things could've gone WAY worse. Was very fortunate to have the homie Matt Shiffler along to drive in the interim, avoided a catastrophically-blown engine, and a potential breakdown in the middle of nowhere without cell service.
The next morning, we hiked to this gorgeous overlook in Dolly Sods before dawn. Never did make it back to Table Rock for sunrise...but that's what next time (and a higher-clearance vehicle) are for
